Huawei to Launch TV White Space LTE TDD System Trial

[Shenzhen, China, 20 October, 2011:]: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced the successful launch of a TV White Space (TVWS) LTE TDD system trial. This innovative TVWS LTE TDD solution provided by Huawei will enable more widespread usage of TVWS spectrum and will improve spectrum efficiency.

As a result of the proliferation of smart devices, which has led to a much higher utilization of spectrum resources, mobile operators worldwide are now confronted with the urgent problem of limited spectrum resources. The search for new spectra has put a spotlight on TVWS - the spaces left between channels to limit interference. This spectrum, abundant in every country and vastly underused, offers many benefits for mobile broadband use, including large bandwidth, excellent penetration and propagation, and extensive coverage.

In 2008, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the unlicensed use of TVWS. This decision opened the door for new devices and applications with support for TVWS to hit the U.S. market. As other regions and countries move toward finalizing regulations and standards for TVWS, the spectrum will eventually fulfill mobile broadband requirements and more applications will be created.

Huawei began this TVWS LTE TDD system development and verification test in 2009. After two years, the first phase of the laboratory trial was successfully completed in August 2011. The next phase—the system performance and interference coordination test and field trial—will be finalized in mid-2012.

"The LTE TDD system can take full advantage of TVWS bandwidth and enhance spectrum efficiency,"said Mr. Tan Zhu, director of wireless strategy department, Huawei. "We have seen that our TVWS LTE TDD system offers broader coverage and fewer sites, reducing both capital and operational expenditures. This LTE TDD system will benefit network and service providers by offering a combination of strong operation and management capability, a mature industry chain, and variety of deployment scenarios. We are excited to undertake the second phase of the trial next year."

Indosat, Nokia Siemens Networks conduct Indonesia’s first 1800 MHz LTE trial

Indosat, Nokia Siemens Networks conduct Indonesia’s first 1800 MHz LTE trial

Indosat, Indonesia’s leading operator, and Nokia Siemens Networks have successfully conducted the country’s first Long Term Evolution (LTE) field trial in the 1800 MHz band. The trial is based on FDD-LTE (frequency division duplex) technology and showcases Indosat’s network readiness to re-farm the existing 1800 MHz frequency band. The trial took place in Surabaya and Bali in the presence of government representatives and regulatory authorities.

During the trial, the companies showcased innovative applications such as e-doctor and e-education in the cities of Surabaya and Denpasar, which enabled a patient to remotely consult a doctor, and a lecturer to teach students, through video conferencing. In addition, 3D video streaming and CCTV camera surveillance were demonstrated.

“LTE brings a new generation of communications to Indonesia,” said Hans C. Moritz, director and chief technology officer, Indosat. “Nokia Siemens Networks was an obvious choice for the trial due to its large installed base and ability to deliver LTE in the 1800 MHz frequency band. The company’s technology leadership and excellent support services can help us re-use our existing 1800 MHz band, currently used for 2G services, for future LTE services.”

“Use of mobile broadband is growing at an unprecedented rate in Indonesia. Operators, therefore need to increase their focus on accommodating data traffic and providing faster data services,” added Harald Preiss, head of the customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “With LTE, operators such as Indosat will be able to offer increased throughput of up to 100 Mbps with a latency, or delay of only 10 milliseconds. More importantly, operators will be able to reduce cost per bit by up to 50%.”

Nokia Siemens Networks provided its commercial, end-to-end, LTE solution for the field trial. This included a radio network based on the Flexi Multiradio Base Station and Evolved Packed Core*, comprising Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway). It also provided its Home Subscriber Server (HSS) to manage subscriber-related information and provide user authentication and authorization. Nokia Siemens Networks also provided network installation, commissioning and integration services.

Telstra announces next phase of its Mobility Partner Program

Telstra announces next phase of its Mobility Partner Program

Telstra today announced the launch of an online mobile solutions search tool which is the next phase of its popular Mobility Partner Program.

The new tool offers a simple way for customers to search for companies providing business mobility solutions and allows them to connect to partners in the program.

Mike Cihra, Director of M2M and Partners at Telstra, said the move is another example of the success of Telstra’s channel initiatives giving its partners an additional avenue for sales, promotion and brand awareness.

“With the growth of mobile solutions such as machine-to-machine technology, the Mobility Partner Program represents a critical one-stop-shop for both customers and Telstra partners to come together to find the right technology solution that will work to its optimum on our Next G network,” Mr Cihra said.

Korea Telecom relies on Rohde & Schwarz T&M equipment for LTE start in Seoul

Munich, October 19, 2011 — The schedule is ambitious: Korea Telecom wants to provide nationwide LTE coverage by 2013. The South Korean network operator is relying on the scalable R&S TS8980 RF test system and the R&S CMW500 wideband radio communication tester from Rohde & Schwarz to ensure the smooth rollout of fourth-generation mobile radio. The two companies have therefore decided on a long-term LTE cooperation.

Korea Telecom uses the R&S TS8980 in the test lab to perform transmitter and receiver tests on LTE-capable user equipment. The system also supports radio resource management (RRM) tests, which aim at utilizing radio resources more efficiently. Existing LTE resources are only made available when users actually require them. Resources must frequently be reallocated because bandwidth utilization varies heavily.

Korea Telecom uses the R&S CMW500 wideband radio communication tester for RF and protocol tests on LTE user equipment. These measurements are made in the signaling mode. In signaling tests, the devices under test (DUTs) are examined in the future network under near-real conditions. Especially when introducing new technologies such as LTE, this procedure helps to avoid risks. The R&S CMW500 also supports the measurements required for smooth handover between the LTE infrastructure and the existing WCDMA infrastructure.

Rohde & Schwarz and Korea Telecom have been partners for years. Korea Telecom deploys Rohde & Schwarz test and measurement equipment in its WCDMA networks. The Munich company has already written interoperability tests (IOT) for the South Korean network operator. Dietmar Vahldiek, Head of Systems and Projects in the Rohde & Schwarz T&M Division, is pleased about the closer collaboration: "South Korea is an important market for Rohde & Schwarz. Bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications are spreading rapidly – there is no way around LTE. We are delighted that one of our key customers is again relying on our solutions to implement this new technology."

NEC's iPASOLINK Selected by India's Tata Teleservices for Backhaul of Mobile Broadband Traffic

Tokyo, October 18, 2011 -NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today announced an agreement with Tata Teleservices Limited (TTL; Headquarters: Mumbai), a fast-growing Indian telecom service operator, to newly deploy NEC's iPASOLINK platform for the transformation of TTL's backhaul mobile transport network. The iPASOLINK provides customers with an ultra-flexible mobile transport network that can be adapted for next-generation IP-based networks, while meeting the current capacity and service demands of customers.

"NEC Corporation is one of our key suppliers of Microwave Equipment, having a total installed base of more than 100,000 terminals. NEC has been associated with TTL for many years, providing microwave equipment and services for our CDMA and GSM network rollouts. TTL is now in the process of expanding its network for both coverage and capacity in the mobility and enterprise business segments, which will require backhaul of both TDM and IP traffic. Our requirements, therefore, necessitate the deployment of Hybrid Radio in the network. NEC's iPASOLINK platform fully meets these requirements and can be adapted for Next-Generation IP-based networks," said Mr. AG Rao, Executive President, Enterprise Business and Technology, TTL, said.

The iPASOLINK is designed to support the transition from today's hybrid TDM and Ethernet backhaul towards full IP transport, while significantly reducing the cost of ownership thanks to its all-in-one converged design. iPASOLINK's flexible modular architecture allows operators to optimize their network strategies and to gradually invest in step with actual service and traffic demands. This design, combined with NEC's unparalleled engineering reliability, ensures that iPASOLINK delivers outstanding value to operators.

"As the Indian mobile communication market continues its rapid expansion, operators face the challenge of making significant investments in order to provide next generation mobile broadband services while managing CAPEX and OPEX. This agreement between TTL and NEC proves that mobile operators have the appetite for a single, converged and flexible backhaul platform that they can manage and adapt according to their network service demands," said, Takayuki Morita, Senior Vice President of NEC.

The iPASOLINK series is the next generation of PASOLINK products. Since the launch of PASOLINK in the early 1980s, mobile communications have exceptionally expanded and the system has been widely adopted as a microwave communications tool for mobile backhaul, with shipments of approximately 1.7 million units throughout 145 countries.

Korea Telecom Licenses SPIRIT DSP's Mobile VoIP Engine

MOSCOW, Russia – October 18, 2011 –  SPIRIT DSP, the world's top voice and video over IP engines provider, announced today that Korean Telecom giant KT has licensed the company's TeamSpirit® Voice Engine Mobile, an SDK (Software Development Kit) that enables high-definition (HD) VoIP (voice over IP) calling on a broad range mobile devices.  KT is S. Korea's top fixed-lined operator and the No. 2 mobile carrier in the region.

Internet telephony is Korea's prominent daily communications medium.  The VoIP rates are 80 percent cheaper for intercity calls, 20 percent lower for calls to mobile phones and 95 percent cheaper for international calls.  According to the Korean Communications Commission (KCC), the number of paid Internet telephony subscribers broke the 10 million mark this year.

"With the growing popularity of VoIP calling in Asia Pacific, coupled by the sheer volume of mobile data usage, the problem of lost or jammed traffic becomes a real barrier for smooth, quality communications over mobile networks," said SPIRIT's VP Sales Alexander Kravchenko. "The priorities of consumers and businesses are shifting from an experience that's 'good enough' to a demand for a higher quality mobile HD VoIP experience that SPIRIT engine delivers to KT's millions of mobile subscribers."

The TeamSpirit Engine is a SDK for real-time IP calling/conferencing communications, allowing business application developers and service providers to offer superior quality communications products to millions of global users.  The TeamSpirit Engine software uniquely combines scalable echo- and noise-free audio with scalable video, a necessary marriage to ensure the highest quality conferencing experience. TeamSpirit enables many hours of battery life in wideband talk mode. The voice engine includes highly optimized standard voice codecs and a patent-free wideband error-resilient scalable SPIRIT IP-MRTM voice codec (IETF RFC 6262).  The video engine includes SPIRIT's H.264 scalable video codec that is able to adapt streams to each peer’s network and PC environments without heavy transcoding and it includes a multi-component stream protection module that compensates for network jitter and packet loss.
